Land planning and design services were provided for 450 acres in the Southport Plan area of West Sacramento. The land is part of the Southeast Village and borders the Sacramento River to the east and south and is a short drive from downtown Sacramento. Based on site visits and discussions, the following goals for planning River Park were established:

  • preserve the site’s unique natural resources
  • create a public realm that is connected at the site, city, and regional levels
  • provide a range of housing choices for today’s and future generations of West Sacramento residents

The master plan and design guidelines respond to the three goals by creating a network of interconnected park and open spaces that preserve the site’s natural resources, promoting best practices in stormwater management through a non-piped solution, and achieving a higher net density through compact development that embraces a wide range of housing choices. The River Park plan protects an existing oak grove in its entirety as a central amenity of the Village’s open space system. The plan will also use existing irrigation channels to convey water from the eastern to the western boundary of the site in a continuous water channel or greenway. The corridor provides the opportunity to develop a surface water feature that will continue to convey irrigation water, and serve as a linear drainage corridor for unpiped stormwater runoff. A regional trail will be constructed within the corridor between the regional park at the bend in the Sacramento River and the city’s rails-to-trails corridor that links to the greater region. Further, the majority of the greenway will be planted with native plants, many of which already exist at the site.
