Owner/Client:      Tahoe Transportation District

To provide congestion relief, the Tahoe Transportation District proposes realignment of State Route 89 and improvements to the State Route 89 North Tahoe “wye” intersection and Fanny Bridge over the Truckee River. The improvements involve:

  • congestion relief features at the highway intersection
  • rehabilitation or replacement of Fanny Bridge
  • construction of a new bridge over the Truckee River
  • and bicycle and pedestrian facilities (including connection to the Truckee River bike path)

Alternative uses of the existing Fanny Bridge include continued highway use, limited local automobile access, or pedestrian and bicycle use only. Ascent prepared environmental documents to comply with CEQA, NEPA, and TRPA requirements. The Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands - Highway division is the NEPA lead agency and both Caltrans and the U. S. Forest Service were involved in the NEPA documentation. Placer County is involved in the CEQA documentation. Key issues include impacts to the Truckee River, historic resources, land use impacts, aesthetics, construction noise and air quality, and traffic and transportation advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives. Extensive interagency coordination is included in the environmental document preparation process.
